Abuja, Nigeria – October 25, 2024
The Performing Musicians Employers' Association of Nigeria (PMAN) held a crucial meeting with the Registrar of Trade Unions, Mr. Folonipe Amos, on October 22, 2024, at his office in Abuja. The meeting aimed to address internal leadership disputes and set a clear path for the union’s growth and stability.
Opening the session at 11:46 a.m., Mr. Folonipe Amos welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of resolving PMAN’s leadership issues through constructive dialogue. Expressing his disappointment over the absence of certain suspended National Working Committee (NWC) members—Sunny Neji, Zaaki Azzey, Steven Michael Ugochukwu (Ruggedman), former PMAN General Secretary Mr. Boniface Itodo, and other aggrieved members—the Registrar reminded attendees of the meeting’s purpose: interpreting the union’s constitution and ensuring the leadership’s compliance with established guidelines.
PMAN President, Mr. Pretty Okafor, addressed the council with a detailed account of the recent disputes. Despite ongoing challenges, he reiterated his commitment to PMAN’s progress and continuity. He noted the ongoing development of key union projects, including the PMAN House, PMAN Radio Station, and land development in Abuja. Mr. Okafor further disclosed his efforts to secure radio equipment and international partnerships, despite opposition from certain NWC members, which escalated while he was abroad on official duties.
The Registrar clarified that the NWC operates under the oversight of PMAN’s National Executive Council (NEC), which holds the power to override NWC decisions if necessary. He advised all parties to remain within PMAN’s constitutional framework and emphasized that disputes of this nature fall under the Trade Union Dispute Act.
During the meeting, NEC members raised concerns about NWC allocations and stressed the importance of inclusive decision-making, especially for PMAN’s state chapters. In a show of support, the NEC presented Mr. Okafor with a letter of confidence, recognizing his steady leadership and dedication to the union’s growth through these challenging times.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Okafor expressed gratitude to the Registrar, union members, and stakeholders for their support. He reaffirmed his commitment to uniting PMAN and announced plans to establish local secretariats in state chapters, furthering his vision for a unified and effective union.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment to peacefully resolve disputes and adhere to the PMAN constitution, ensuring continued growth and success for Nigerian musicians both domestically and internationally.
